Hi yall.
Our school district just issued Cromebooks to all 3rd through 8th graders. Therefore, my son is the proud new owner of a Cromebook. He loves it and I must say, it's pretty darned cute. lol Anyway, I've read online that they do have a built in screen reader and I've seen the lists of shortcut keys.
Have any of you more technically adventurous folks used a Cromebook? What are your thoughts? They're relatively inexpensive so I'm wondering if I want Santa to bring me one. lol
I have used one. i am completely blind, and was not at all impressed. The screen reader
is pretty terrible, and it still leaves a lot unreadable to someone who cannot see. Also,
ChromeBooks in and of themselves do not last very long. We had them at my high
school and about half of them were not working and needed repair three or four months
into school. If you have usable vision and won't really be using the computer very much,
then a ChromeBook would be fine. Otherwise I recommend against it.
If you just want Santa to bring you another toy, sure, but for actual use, no.
For the sighted, these are even limited to a point, but will handle the basics.
It was the reason they were created.
I think a ChromeBook was essentially a tablet with a keyboard, that had a pc-style
operating system ... or was supposed to. My high school issued them, and for me,
being totally blind, they didn't work. For one thing, the screen reader put me to sleep.
For another, there was no "read all" command, so I had to move line by line. The
rhythm of it all put me to sleep. Then there was the issue where the computer wouldn't
access classroom. Or anything else. I ended up having someone click on things the
majority of the time, until my school got us laptops.
This is exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks! I think Santa will just keep on saving for the MacBook I'll ultimately need when my laptop crokes.
yes. the MacBook air would be the best. I know, the pro, you get more power, but battery life, you can't beat the 13 inch air.
